Buck Rogers by way of Gilgamesh

Published by

I’ve been up now, for 75 minutes. Its 3:45am, and I woke up, inexplicably at 2:30, and haven’t been able to fall back asleep.

Oh, how I’m going to regret this in a few hours.

So, I just knocked back a chapter of Ralph Metzner’s The Unfolding Self, as I have 3 chapters of THAT to read before Friday, as well, and this particular chapter involved animals, and animal parts of the brain, power animals, animal spirit guides, etc.

He touched on the idea of the epic of Gilgamesh pertaining to consciousness (briefly, Gilgamesh wrestles with the animal-creature Enkidu might be seen as taming our inner animal selves, and when Enkidu eventually dies, well, you get the idea).

So, what leaps into my mind at this ungodly hour, in relation to this ancient myth?

The second fucking season of Buck Rogers, where Buck meets Hawk, fights with him, and they later become best buds, like Gilgamesh and Enkidu, exploring the far reaches of space, and having various adventures. Doesn’t Hawk die, later on, too?

I am so not writing this essay.

Its almost 4am, and I AM SO NOT WRITING THIS ESSAY COMPARING BUCK ROGERS TO CONSCIOUSNESS TRANSFORMATION.

So, I’m telling myself, that at best, the second season of Buck Rogers had some subversively literate script-writers who revised / borrowed / stole the Gilgamesh epic for their own nefarious means. At worst, maybe it was a Joseph Campbell-like manifestation of an old story.

BUT I DON’T CARE. DO YOU HEAR ME, BRAIN??

SOMEBODY ELSE CAN WRITE THIS ONE OUT. SHUT UP!!!

SHUT UP, UNIVERSE! I’M NOT LISTENING! I DON’T CARE THAT BUCK ROGERS WAS PLAYED BY GIL GERARD, AND YOU’RE THROWING IN GIL GERRARD / GILGAMESH AT ME!! LALALALALALA!! I’M NOT LISTENING!!
